Jeff Pitzer formed his own law firm in Portland, Oregon in January 2002, after nearly 12 years (the last five as a full equity partner) at a 400-lawyer national litigation powerhouse in Chicago.
Mr. Pitzer obtained a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Kansas in 1986, and earned his law degree, cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin in 1990. After practicing in Chicago for 12 years, he relocated to the Northwest to start his own practice. Three of his four kids have been born in Oregon, and he and his family are very happy to call Portland their home.
Since forming Pitzer Law in 2002, Mr. Pitzer has tried and won cases throughout Oregon in both the state and federal courts and on appeal. For example, in 2023, on behalf of a family-owned construction business Mr. Pitzer won a $65.5 million jury verdict against one of the largest and best-represented accounting firms in the world.
In 2021, Mr. Pitzer convinced the Oregon Supreme Court to uphold a $10 million jury verdict Mr. Pitzer obtained at trial in a complicated case involving the theft of cutting-edge laser technology.
When not at work, Mr. Pitzer spends time with his wife and family, reads, plays basketball and an occasional round of golf.
Grace Hellwarth joined Pitzer Law as a paralegal in 2021 after earning a bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Oregon Robert D. Clark Honors College.
During her time at the University of Oregon, Grace worked as a research assistant studying the parole decisions of juveniles serving life sentences. This project fostered Grace’s growing interest in the law.
Since joining Pitzer Law, Grace has played a critical role in preparing for hearings and trials in both state and federal court, including a two-week jury trial in 2023. She has become expert at filing pleadings in state, federal and appellate courts, managing electronic discovery, editing briefs and assisting with legal research.
When not at work, Grace enjoys taking walks to explore the city, visiting her local theater, attending concerts and trying new restaurants.
Kate Pitzer started at Pitzer Law in 2024, after earning a degree in Philosophy, summa cum laude, from Cal Poly State in San Luis Obispo, CA. Kate developed a passion for law and justice in college, interning for two years at a local nonprofit called Restorative Partners, where she helped develop a pilot program with the District Attorney’s office in San Luis Obispo County to implement restorative justice practices.
At Pitzer Law Kate assists with legal research, document analysis, editing and fact investigations.
While not at work, Kate enjoys hiking, backpacking, ceramics, and travelling with her friends and family. She recently moved to Madrid, Spain where she continues to assist the firm remotely.
